The road rises above tree line to a high alpine moor with Beinn Toaig and Stob Ghabhar to our left. This is the Rannoch Moor, the largest wilderness area in the UK. A landscape similar to the alpine tundra we see in Colorado. Still cool and overcast, we made good time to the high point of the day on the northeast ridge of Beinn Toaig with views from Loch Tulla to Dubh Lochan and our destination for the night, King's House Hotel, the east entrance to Glen Coe.
Meall a'Bhuiridh (elev. 3636') came into view as we descended. This is the home of the Glencoe Mountain Ski Area. An open chairlift ascends the massive mount. A cool wind and light drizzle set in and hurried us toward the hotel and a pub lunch. Scottish red deer greeted us outside the hotel. A short walk in true highland country with traditional Scottish weather made for a great day. Time to rest up for tomorrow begins with "The Devil's Staircase".
