Tuesday Afternoon in Glasgow

Quiz Night RewardsA bright sunny and warm day in Glasgow started with shopping in central Glasgow and tea at the Willow Tea Room. Interiors by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Good food in a historic setting.

A nice walk back to the university to tour the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House recreated on the uni grounds. The informative tour took 30 minutes but provided a wealth of information. Recently one of Margaret McDonald Mackintosh's works sold for over a million pounds at auction, far more than any of her husbands works. Quite sad since she died with an estate of only eighty eight pounds.

The Hunterian Museum on campus had more works by the Mackintoshes, the "Gang of Four", and the Glasgow Boys. Later works by Glasgow artists known as the Colourist showed bright bold color in a more twentieth century style.

The exhibit on the Antonine Wall was a change of pace. A second century earthen wall built by Roman centurions from Glasgow to Edinburgh has almost completely melted back into the earth, only to be rediscovered in the last three hundred years. The legions who built the wall carved stone markers to dedicate each portion of the wall as completed. The markers, statuary, and the remains of everyday Roman live are on display. After less than 30 years of occupation the Romans retreated south to Hadrian's Wall, abandoning the Antonine Wall.

Pub Quiz Night with the lads was good fun. Had a very nice heffeweissen from West Brewery. We took second place and the prize was, yes, more beer.
