Day one of the West Highland Way: Milngavie to Drymen

Mugdock WoodsMargaret arose early to drive us to Milngavie, the official start of the West Highland Way (from now on shown as whw). Milngavie is a picturesque town just north of Glasgow, with several shops that cater to the WHW hikers. Met the lads from Travel-Lite who took our suitcases from us and will move them from bnb to bnb daily as we travel. Travel-Lite also has a shop in Milngivie for any last minute needs.

The hike starts from a stone obelisk in the town square and quickly moves out of town along the local stream. Mugdock Woods were in riotous spring colors, with bluebells carpeting the ground. We passed Craigallion Loch with a stately manor on the far side, and small cabins by Carbeth Loch. After crossing the B821, we traversed a sheep paddock to reach the crest of a ridge overlooking Glengoyne, Dumgoyne (a 1401 meter peak), and the Campsie Fells (a very lush green ridge). Descending to Blaine Waters, we made Glengoyne Distillery by 11:30, in time for the noon tour. Mari highly suggests the whiskey and chocolate pairing tasting. Glengoyone has been a licensed distillery since 1833, prior to which they had whiskey, but no license (ha). One of only a hand full of distillers left who are still Scottish owned. Joe highly recommends the 21 year old scotch.

Beech Tree Inn is located just north of the distillery and caters to whw hikers. Beer garden, full menu, and bathrooms, yeah. Then began what Mari describes as the longest 4 miles ever, probably because it was closer to 6 miles in the sun after scotch for lunch. We did get a sneek peak at Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond as we reached the ridge outside of Drymen. Promises of what is to come the next two days.

Drymen is a small village just south of Loch Lomond. Definitely set-up for tourist, with many hotels, BnBs, pubs, and restaurants. Our BnB was just the other side of town, the Bramblewood Inn. Run by Kate and Ally, the inn is very nice with large spacious rooms and modern baths. A large deck runs the length of the building with great views of the woods. Very peaceful and welcoming. Thanks Julie at Gemini Walks for booking us here. A great start to a wonderful trip.
